Mississippi Teen Faces Capital Murder Charges in Deaths of Elderly Couple; Prior Burglary and Theft Suspect

A Mississippi teenager accused of fatally shooting an elderly couple in their home was previously identified by local law enforcement as a suspect in numerous burglaries and vehicle thefts throughout the region. Cordarius Hobbs, 17, is charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of burglary, along with 10 additional charges in connection with the June 3 deaths of Billy Blair, 74, and Virginia Carol Blair, 71, in Mendenhall.

According to an incident report from the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department, investigators described Hobbs as a “troubled juvenile” with suspected involvement in multiple property crimes in the immediate area. The report notes that deputies and investigators believed Hobbs could be connected to the home invasion and homicides when they first arrived at the scene. Hobbs had allegedly worked for the Blairs on odd jobs around their property prior to the incident.

Contractors installing a generator at the residence discovered an open car door with several firearms on the seats at approximately 10 a.m. on June 3. After calling the Simpson County Sheriff’s Department for a welfare check at 11:30 a.m., officers arrived to find the suspect firing at them, initiating a standoff lasting nearly two hours before Hobbs was apprehended while attempting to flee.

Virginia Carol Blair was discovered in a fetal position in a bedroom with three gunshot wounds to the back of her head, while Billy Blair lay on his back in the kitchen with three gunshot wounds to his face. Hobbs was captured without weapons in his possession and has been denied bond pending trial.

Hobbs’ defense attorney, Zachary Vaughn, contends there is insufficient forensic evidence directly linking his client to the shooting. Vaughn highlighted the absence of eyewitness identification at the time of the incident and noted that one victim sustained gunshots to both sides of the head, suggesting possible involvement of multiple assailants. Hobbs’ grandfather, Billy Newsome, expressed doubt about his grandson’s guilt, questioning the circumstances of the alleged crime.
