A fast-moving wildfire in the Gironde region of southwest France prompted authorities to order the evacuation of 55,000 residents overnight Sunday, escalating a humanitarian crisis that has now displaced a quarter-million people across the area. The blaze, which has raged since midweek, continues advancing toward Bordeaux, one of France’s most historically significant wine-producing cities.
Officials in the Gironde prefecture issued emergency evacuation directives for five additional communities located southwest of Bordeaux as gusty overnight winds intensified the fire’s spread. In response to the escalating threat, regional authorities also mandated a partial shutdown of a principal highway connecting Bordeaux to the Atlantic coast.
The evacuation crisis extends beyond the Gironde region, where a separate fire in the neighboring Landes region forced 30,000 people to flee earlier in the week. Combined, the two fires have displaced more than 250,000 residents, marking one of France’s most significant wildfire-related displacements in recent memory.
