A leading House Republican is contending that Democratic Socialist of America-backed candidates are pulling the Democratic Party further to the left than party leadership publicly acknowledges. House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., suggested to Fox News Digital that recent primary victories by DSA-endorsed candidates should alarm voters and potentially improve Republican chances of maintaining control of the House in November.
“The Democrat party is now being infiltrated with truly communist elements. I think Americans are going to realize that the Democrats are truly the crazy party now, and the country can’t tolerate that,” Harris said during the interview. He predicted the situation would strengthen GOP prospects as voters head to the polls later this year.
Republicans face a challenging map as they attempt to preserve their narrow House majority through the final years of President Donald Trump’s term. Lawmakers returned to their districts this week to spend the next five weeks campaigning, with DSA primary victories emerging as a central talking point on the campaign trail.
In New York City, two House candidates endorsed by democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani defeated sitting progressive incumbents and are positioned to win general election races. A third open House seat saw a Mamdani-backed candidate prevail over an opponent supported by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.
Harris used Mamdani’s policy positions as an example of the ideological shift, citing the mayor’s support for government-operated grocery stores. “That’s called communism. That’s way beyond socialism. That’s communism,” Harris stated, comparing such policies to those in Russia and China.
Harris occupies a safe Republican seat following Maryland Democrats’ failure to alter the state’s congressional boundaries before the midterm cycle.
