With less than two days remaining before the tournament concludes, President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino offered glowing assessments of the 2024 World Cup’s performance and legacy.
The United States hosted the global soccer championship, with 11 of 16 stadiums serving as match venues. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and the championship game all took place across American soil.
Infantino credited Trump’s leadership for the tournament’s achievement. “I promised you we would make a great World Cup. And, by all means, this World Cup has exceeded all expectations,” the FIFA chief said during remarks ahead of Sunday’s title match.
The tournament attracted approximately 7 million spectators to live matches, according to Infantino. Television viewership numbers reached into the billions globally, he noted.
“The American dream came to reality. We united the world, we united the world in America,” Infantino told Trump. He emphasized how visitors and worldwide audiences alike experienced the event’s scope and pageantry.
Infantino went further in his praise, declaring the World Cup “the greatest human, social and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed and seen.”
Trump called the championship “the most successful sporting event maybe in the history of the world.” He highlighted the event’s broader significance beyond athletics, describing it as something “very, very special.”
Both leaders plan to attend the final at MetLife Stadium, where they will present the trophy to the winning nation. Argentina and Spain will compete for the title, with Argentina seeking consecutive championships and Spain chasing a second crown.
