Alex Bowman has resolved questions about his future in NASCAR by agreeing to a one-year contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports that will carry him through the 2027 season, after which he plans to step away from full-time racing competition. The 33-year-old driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet will conclude his career with the organization that has been central to his professional success.
Bowman attributed his decision to a desire to protect his long-term health and well-being. “The sport asks a lot of you, and I’ve learned it’s important to listen to your body and make the right choices for yourself,” he said in a statement, expressing deep gratitude toward team owner Rick Hendrick, primary sponsor Ally, and the entire Hendrick Motorsports organization.
The driver has endured multiple serious injuries in recent years that have sidelined him from competition. A series of concussion-like symptoms cost him five races during 2022, while a broken vertebra from a sprint car accident forced him to miss three contests in 2023. Most recently, vertigo issues kept him out of four races this season.
Through his NASCAR Cup Series career, Bowman has earned eight victories, including four wins during the 2021 season. Currently, he sits 29th in points with a 21.765 average finishing position—the worst of his tenure at Hendrick Motorsports, which began in 2015.
