Rapinoe Frames Trans Sports Ban Debate as Broader Attack on Women’s Empowerment

Former U.S. Women’s National Team captain Megan Rapinoe characterized proposed bans on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports as part of a larger societal effort to undermine women’s advancement, remarks she made during a Tuesday appearance on ABC’s “The View.” Rapinoe contended that the policy debate transcends questions of athletic fairness and instead reflects deeper opposition to women’s empowerment and participation in sports.

Rapinoe rejected the primary justification offered by restriction advocates, who cite concerns about protecting opportunities and safety for cisgender female athletes. She asserted instead that opponents weaponize the transgender sports issue as a divisive tactic designed to suppress women’s overall influence in society. “They’re going after trans people in sports, and they’re using this as a wedge issue because we love sports,” Rapinoe said during the interview.

The athlete highlighted specific legislative proposals as evidence of the broader campaign, citing Initiative IL26-638 in Washington state, which the House Republican Caucus described as prohibiting students defined as “biologically male” from competing in female-only school athletic activities. The measure would mandate biological sex verification through healthcare providers, a requirement Rapinoe characterized as invasive and unnecessary.

Rapinoe argued that women’s participation in elite-level sports provides substantial benefits including increased confidence and professional advancement, citing the prevalence of former athletes in executive leadership positions. She reinforced these arguments in a recent Marie Claire article titled “Anti-Trans Legislation Isn’t About ‘Protecting Girls’—It’s About Distracting Us From What Matters,” writing that transgender athletes have competed in sports for decades despite legislative efforts to restrict participation.
