Nancy Armour, a sports columnist for USA Today, issued an apology Thursday via Bluesky for a recent column that drew comparisons between Caitlin Clark and the historical murder of Emmett Till. Armour stated she had made “an inartful comparison” and acknowledged failing to provide sufficient context for her reference to Till’s death.
The original column argued that Clark’s reactions to missed calls during WNBA games placed Black and queer players “in danger.” Armour connected the All-Star Game being held in Chicago, Till’s hometown, to her broader concerns about player safety and the historical context of violence against Black Americans.
The comparison drew criticism from multiple quarters, including members of the activist community Armour appeared to address. Several observers on Bluesky accused the columnist of trivializing Till’s murder by invoking it in the context of a routine basketball dispute.
USA Today has not publicly stated whether it directed Armour to issue the apology. The publication did not respond to requests for comment regarding the circumstances that led to her statement.
