Trey Wingo Disputes Emmanuel Acho’s Claims About Ryan Clark’s Role in Building ESPN’s NFL Live

Trey Wingo, who departed ESPN in November 2020, has publicly rejected claims made by former NFL linebacker and analyst Emmanuel Acho regarding the development of the network’s signature “NFL Live” program. Acho contended that Ryan Clark transformed the show into a “juggernaut” alongside contributors Rutledge, Mina, and Spears, though he acknowledged Clark did not originate the concept.

Wingo, who hosted the program for 15 consecutive years beginning in 2003 and concluding in 2018, responded by publishing viewership data that he said undermined Acho’s position. The ratings information, sourced from ESPN’s own reporting, demonstrated the show peaked at 688,000 average viewers during comparable early-season broadcasts in 2013, before declining to 624,000 in 2012, 486,000 in 2015, 492,000 in 2016, 449,000 in 2021, and 440,000 in 2025.

The dispute originated when OutKick’s Dan Zaksheske challenged “The Breakfast Club” hosts’ claim that Clark built “NFL Live,” noting the program debuted in 1998 when Clark was 18 years old—four years before entering professional football and 17 years before joining ESPN. Acho subsequently responded by acknowledging the show existed before Clark’s arrival but contended it lacked an audience at that time.

Wingo posted a response on X referencing a previous public apology Acho had issued to San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel following critical remarks. “Let your apology be as loud as your disrespect,” Wingo wrote, paraphrasing the sentiment Acho had expressed during his reconciliation with Samuel.

Clark joined ESPN in 2015 and remained with the network for more than 11 seasons, overlapping with Wingo for approximately five years before Wingo’s departure. Wingo accumulated nearly 23 years of service with ESPN during his tenure overseeing “NFL Live” through its strongest viewership period.
