House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has racked up significant legislative achievements this week, including passage of bills restricting congressional stock trading, preventing a government shutdown, and advancing a $95 billion budget package aligned with President Donald Trump’s priorities. Yet these successes offer little respite, as Republicans across the ideological spectrum express mounting dissatisfaction with his leadership approach in a chamber where the GOP controls just a handful of seats.
Several Republican lawmakers granted anonymity told Fox News Digital that Johnson has yielded too readily to the demands of the conservative Freedom Caucus while neglecting other members’ concerns. One GOP representative stated that the Freedom Caucus effectively controls the chamber, with rank-and-file Republicans simply falling in line, while another complained that Johnson fails to push back against the White House when necessary.
Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, a Freedom Caucus member, acknowledged that leadership focuses resources on the party’s most vulnerable members—a strategy that inevitably sidelines others. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., suggested Johnson could do more to help members advance non-controversial, cost-free district priorities through the legislative process, citing her own stalled bills on veteran HOV lane access and heroin injection site enforcement.
Johnson’s defenders argue his close relationship with Trump and his fundraising efforts—projected to reach $500 million—demonstrate his commitment to all Republicans, regardless of their caucus affiliation. Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., called the legislative output “remarkable” given constraints posed by the chamber’s paper-thin Republican majority.
The Speaker’s ability to maintain control remains unquestioned among allies, despite behind-the-scenes grumbling. With Republicans able to lose only two votes on party-line measures, however, every member wields outsized leverage, creating an inherently volatile dynamic that tests Johnson’s navigation skills.
