Arkansas Officer Dies Rescuing Fiancée Hours After Proposal

Fred Marsh, a 24-year-old Rogers Police Department officer, lost his life Saturday while attempting to rescue his fiancée from Missouri’s Elk River near Noel. The tragedy unfolded just hours after Marsh had proposed to Hailey that morning. Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed that Marsh entered the water to assist another swimmer in distress and never surfaced.

Marsh and a fellow Rogers officer were canoeing with another couple when Hailey struggled against the current while attempting to return to the boat. Both officers entered the water to help her reach safety, but as they did so, Marsh became exhausted and went under. His body was recovered and he was pronounced dead Sunday, according to authorities.

Sheryl Padgett, Hailey’s mother, described Marsh as a devoted and selfless individual guided by Christian faith. “He saw the love of his life in distress, and he was going to help his friend and do what a good human would do,” Padgett told KHBS. Though not legally her son-in-law, Padgett said Marsh had become family to her immediately after he began dating her daughter three years ago.

Marsh was in his first year with the Rogers Police Department, having graduated from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in April. A motorcade honoring him traveled through Northwest Arkansas on Monday as community members and law enforcement lined the route to pay respects. A GoFundMe campaign created by Hailey’s sister had raised nearly $2,000 by Thursday to help cover her immediate expenses.
