Florida’s Sumrall Makes SEC Debut With Unfiltered Humor, Pushes Back on Kiffin Comparison

Jon Sumrall used his first appearance at SEC Media Days on Wednesday in Tampa to clarify distinctions between his coaching move and Lane Kiffin’s transition to LSU from Ole Miss. The two coaches have discussed their respective job changes multiple times since December, but Sumrall emphasized they faced fundamentally different circumstances when deciding their next career steps.

Sumrall explained that while Kiffin moved between two Southeastern Conference programs, his own decision involved leaving Conference USA and Tulane for the SEC and Florida. “No two decisions are alike,” Sumrall said, noting he had spoken with Kiffin during the process in October and November. “Lane said ‘you and I are going through the same thing’ and I’m like, ‘No Lane, we’re not.'” Sumrall added that he would not have accepted any position that prevented him from coaching Tulane through the College Football Playoff.

An unplanned moment of levity interrupted Sumrall’s remarks when a reporter’s phone began playing music, prompting the new Gators head coach to joke about his team meeting protocols. “You would be kicked out of our team meeting, I swear,” Sumrall said with a smile, adding that he appreciated authentic communication from his coaching peers.

Sumrall expressed admiration for Ole Miss coach Pete Golding, calling him “going to be himself” and praising his willingness to remain genuine. The Florida coach recalled Tulane’s lopsided losses to Ole Miss during the previous season under two different head coaches, describing both defeats colorfully while acknowledging Golding’s potential for success in his SEC debut.
