Tapper Criticizes Democratic Resistance to Voter Fraud Concerns Following New Jersey Noncitizen Registration Scandal

CNN anchor Jake Tapper drew criticism of Democratic positions on election integrity Tuesday following New Jersey’s disclosure that thousands of noncitizens were mistakenly added to voter registration rolls. Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill revealed that a software malfunction at the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles had resulted in improper voter registrations between June 2023 and June 2024. The error affected roughly 6,600 individuals who were ineligible to vote under state law.

Sherrill’s office determined that fewer than 400 of the improperly registered noncitizens actually cast ballots in elections. During coverage of the announcement, Tapper noted the development undercuts a longstanding Democratic argument against concerns regarding noncitizen voting participation. “This is not good for Democrats’ argument that there’s no such thing as undocumented immigrants voting,” Tapper stated during a panel discussion.

Trump administration officials have seized on the New Jersey case to bolster their push for congressional passage of the SAVE America Act, which aims to strengthen election security measures. President Donald Trump recently delivered remarks from the White House reiterating his call for the legislation’s passage while citing past election vulnerabilities and alleged Chinese interference efforts in previous election cycles.
