California Governor Gavin Newsom ignited a firestorm Thursday evening by publicly advocating for invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office. Newsom alleged that Trump exhibited concerning mental decline during a televised address focused on election security matters.
The governor lambasted Trump’s speech as disjointed and difficult to follow, arguing such performance met the threshold for constitutional removal. His remarks drew swift condemnation from Republican operatives questioning his credibility on the subject.
The Republican National Committee’s communications team fired back with pointed criticism, asserting that Democrats had overlooked substantially greater cognitive problems affecting former President Joe Biden during his entire presidency. The GOP statement read: “You literally propped up a vegetable and lied to the American people about his cognitive decline for four years and never mentioned the 25th amendment once.”
Newsom has previously praised Biden as among America’s finest presidents, a position he maintained even following Biden’s exit from this year’s presidential contest. Commentator Joe Concha, appearing on Fox News, suggested Newsom should refrain from weighing in given his historical defense of Biden’s mental acuity.
The California executive framed Trump’s remarks as electoral strategy designed to bolster Republican performance in upcoming midterm contests. Trump used the occasion to present what he claimed were declassified materials documenting election vulnerabilities and instances of alleged international meddling in U.S. voting systems.
Multiple Democrats voiced support for Newsom’s call. Arizona Representative Yassamin Ansari joined the push for constitutional action, declaring Trump unsuitable for the presidency and a potential threat to national security.
Conservative voices raised broader alarm regarding democratic stability and constitutional precedent. California state legislator Joe Patterson warned that removing an elected president through Cabinet action could itself undermine foundational democratic protections.
