NYC Mayor Mamdani Attacks Democratic Party Leadership as Dominated by Consultants and Wealthy Interests

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused the Democratic Party of being controlled by “well-paid consultants and big money interests” in comments made to Rolling Stone magazine on Tuesday. His remarks came in response to criticism from former Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, who objected to candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America defeating incumbent Democrats in a primary election last month.

Harrison had issued a statement urging DSA-backed candidates not to seek the party’s nomination while simultaneously relying on Democratic resources, volunteers, and infrastructure. The former DNC chair argued that political parties are built by millions of grassroots organizers and activists who deserve commitment from those seeking their support.

Mamdani countered that Harrison’s framing misrepresented the party’s actual membership. He argued that socialist candidates reflect what Democratic voters genuinely want to see, asserting that the working class constitutes the nation’s only true political majority and deserves a party committed to their interests.

The NYC mayor has previously criticized Democrats for losing focus on working people and failing to address affordability concerns. He referenced Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal and the Four Freedoms as examples of when the Democratic Party unambiguously championed working-class priorities.

When pressed to define the working class over the weekend, Mamdani characterized it as people struggling to afford basic necessities, drawing a threshold at approximately one million dollars annually. The DNC declined to comment when contacted by Fox News Digital.
