Dania Beach condo president wants more done by city to keep floodwaters from damaging homes

There has been heavy rain in South Florida throughout the weekend, and in Dania Beach, some neighborhoods were hammered by flooding.On Friday, people were forced to push a car that was stuck in the flood waters near the intersection of Southeast Tenth Street and Second Avenue. The president of Meadowbrook Lakes Condominiums said severe flooding has been an issue for years, and he says it’s past time for the city to help out.“The damage of people driving too fast to houses or condos and cars is crazy,” said condo president Tom Heyen. He said the issue came to a head in April of 2023, when 45 first floor units were ruined by flooding.It was an estimated $6 million loss after all the units needed to be renovated, which also kept residents out of their homes for at least seven months. Some never returned. “Just frustration because I’ve been battling with the city for two, three years,” said Heyen. Dania Beach has a stormwater master plan aimed to keep the rainwater away from homes, but Heyen said the project hasn’t made its way over to his neighborhood.Until then, when heavy rain is in the forecast, he wants the road outside the complex blocked off to through traffic so vehicles don’t push waves of floodwater toward homes,“To keep people from roaring through here and causing waves and damage,” Heyen said.
