Ed Harris Says He Was Misled About Role in “Dutton Ranch,” Nearly Quit Show

Actor Ed Harris expressed frustration with his initial experience on the Paramount+ series “Dutton Ranch,” the “Yellowstone” spinoff created by Taylor Sheridan. Harris told Variety that his early time on set was so disappointing he considered walking away from the project entirely, using strong language to describe his desire to leave.

Prior to committing to the show, Harris said producers outlined the season’s direction and promised him a starring role as one of four principal characters. However, once filming began, he discovered the reality diverged significantly from those assurances. Though his character, veterinarian and former soldier Everett McKinney, proved important to the narrative, the actual work involved did not reflect that prominence.

Harris noted the disconnect between his character’s significance to the story and his limited on-screen presence during season one. He offered a more optimistic outlook regarding season two, hinting that Everett will receive expanded material and greater screen time moving forward.

The “Dutton Ranch” premiere on Paramount+ generated immediate audience interest as fans embraced the continuation of the Dutton family saga. Harris’ character, described as kindhearted yet capable of violence, resonated with viewers despite the actor’s reported dissatisfaction with his role’s execution.
