Rescue Teams Comb Through Debris After Catastrophic Flooding in Eastern Afghanistan

Rescue operations intensified Tuesday across Afghanistan’s eastern Nuristan province following devastating flash floods that struck Monday, leaving dozens dead and scores unaccounted for. The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority reported 23 fatalities, 80 injured, and more than 100 people missing after floodwaters destroyed numerous structures. The provincial capital of Parun sustained particular damage, with authorities confirming the collapse of an undetermined number of buildings across the affected region.

Meteorologists warned of escalating atmospheric threats across the nation, forecasting additional heavy precipitation, severe thunderstorms, gusty winds carrying dust and sand, and potential flash flooding across 10 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces. Transportation and civil aviation officials urged the public to maintain distance from waterways and flood-prone areas as dangerous conditions developed.

Afghanistan faces recurring vulnerability to extreme weather phenomena, with seasonal snowfall and intense rainfall regularly triggering catastrophic floods that claim substantial casualties. The country documented more than 300 deaths from spring floods in 2024, while earlier in the year at least 110 people perished in widespread flooding and landslide events across multiple regions.

Structural vulnerabilities persist due to decades of conflict, inadequate infrastructure systems, economic constraints, habitat degradation, and accelerating climate-related impacts. Remote communities remain particularly susceptible, as traditional mud construction provides minimal protection against torrential water surges or heavy snow accumulation.
