President Donald Trump on Monday characterized his initial telephone conversation with Britain’s newly sworn Prime Minister Andy Burnham as productive, signaling American willingness to support the British leader as he assumes his position. Trump indicated the two executives plan to meet within the coming months to address shared concerns.
During their discussion, the leaders reviewed the historical strength of bilateral ties and examined various policy areas where cooperation could advance mutual interests. Trump emphasized his confidence in Burnham’s ability to navigate the substantial challenges ahead, assuring him of American backing throughout his tenure.
The conversation ranged across multiple geopolitical and economic topics, including energy production in the North Sea, commercial arrangements between the nations, military coordination, and mine clearance operations affecting the Strait of Hormuz, according to Trump’s account.
Burnham’s office issued a separate statement expressing the prime minister’s eagerness to host Trump in Manchester at a later date. British government representatives confirmed that Burnham reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s dedication to ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and safeguarding global trade flows while controlling inflation for households and enterprises.
Burnham, who became Britain’s seventh prime minister in ten years on Monday, replaced Keir Starmer, who held the office for just over two years following his appointment in summer 2024. The new prime minister has pledged to pursue policies promoting industrial revival and sustained economic development nationally.
The pair previously exchanged pointed public remarks before Burnham took office, with Trump characterizing him as “extremely liberal” while Burnham has leveled criticism at the American president in public forums.
