Matthew Smith of Hauppauge entered a guilty plea to charges stemming from a collision in Lake Grove that claimed the life of Nassau County Police Officer Patricia Espinosa in January. Smith admitted to operating his vehicle at approximately 70 miles per hour while under the influence of alcohol and disregarding a red traffic signal before striking Espinosa’s vehicle.
The sentencing imposed on Smith ranges from 7⅓ to 22 years in state prison, reflecting the severity of the offense and the fatal consequences of his actions. The conviction underscores the dangers of impaired driving and resulted in the loss of a law enforcement officer in the line of duty.
