David Leroy French, 21, has been charged with nine counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, nine counts of aggravated assault causing serious physical injury, and one count of discharging a firearm at a structure following a shooting incident in downtown Tucson early Sunday morning. French was booked into custody while hospitalized and will be transferred to the Pima County Adult Detention Complex upon his release from medical care, according to a Tucson Police Department spokesperson.
The gunfire erupted around 2 a.m. in the 100 block of East Congress Street, a densely populated commercial corridor featuring numerous bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. An interim complaint indicates the shooting followed a verbal altercation between individuals in the area. Police identified French as the shooter after reviewing surveillance footage, according to reporting by the Arizona Daily Star.
Officers who were patrolling nearby heard gunshots and responded on foot to the scene. After spotting the suspect fleeing the area, officers repeatedly ordered him to stop, and when he failed to comply, a uniformed officer discharged his weapon and struck French.
Nine other people sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Most victims suffered injuries to their arms or legs, police reported. No fatalities occurred, and no law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. Additional charges against French are pending.
