NTSB: Cargo plane struck cleaning van, SUV before coming to stop outside MIA

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board provided an update Monday on Sunday’s plane crash outside Miami International Airport. On Sunday afternoon, the Amazon cargo plane, operated by 21 Air, went off the end of a runway, crashing into several cars and catching fire before coming to a stop next to a parking lot. Five people were killed and five others were hurt, with three of the injured victims listed in critical condition at last check. During Monday’s press conference, new information was made available regarding what happened in the immediate moments after the plane touched down.“The plane struck navigational aides and equipment, then impacted a 2012 white Ford Econoline van that was owned by Professional Ocean Service Corporation, which is a contract cleaning company for the airlines. In the van were seven persons on board,” said NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy. “The aircraft then traveled through a perimeter fence, and impacted a Toyota Corolla Cross LE, which was traveling on Northwest 67th Avenue,” she said. Officials have not provided any additional information on the injuries suffered by any of the people inside those vehicles. Local 10 News’ Liane Morejon went to the MIA branch location for Professional Ocean Service Corp., but it appeared to be closed.The company’s vice president, Antonio Hespanhol, spoke to Local 10 over the phone and confirmed that a company vehicle was involved in the crash.Speaking from Chile, Hespanhol said he has not yet received confirmation regarding how many of his employees were hurt or killed. Engineered Materials Arresting Systems, or EMAS, are generally used at airports where space constraints prevent a full safety area from being provided. No U.S. airport has EMAS at a runway end that also maintains the full, unobstructed 1,000-foot safety area. EMAS is intended as an alternative, not as an additional layer on top of one.“MIA undergoes a comprehensive FAA safety inspection every year and has consistently met federal airfield safety requirements.“As the NTSB and FAA continue their investigation, we will fully cooperate with their review and evaluate any recommendations that result from it.”Greg Chin, Miami-Dade Aviation Department Communications Director
