House Republicans Escalate Pressure on New Jersey Governor Over Noncitizen Voter Registration Failure

House Republicans are ramping up their oversight efforts regarding New Jersey’s noncitizen voter registration failure, expressing frustration with Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s response to their inquiries. Republican Study Committee member Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey told Fox News Digital that the governor’s written reply was inadequate and politically motivated rather than substantive.

Van Drew characterized Sherrill’s response as “snarky” and accused her of sidestepping the lawmakers’ specific questions about how the registration error occurred and what measures would prevent future incidents. The Republican lawmaker said the governor essentially “took a political mailer and embossed it upon her official letterhead” rather than addressing Congress’s legitimate concerns about election security.

The July 24 inquiry, spearheaded by Van Drew and Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger of Texas, contained 12 detailed questions about the registration failure and its potential impact. Sherrill’s administration stated that affected residents received notifications, but Van Drew insisted the response failed to adequately address the lawmakers’ substantive concerns.

Van Drew announced plans to hold a hearing as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee, with expert witnesses scheduled to testify on the issue. He indicated that if cooperation from state officials remains insufficient, the committee may pursue subpoenas to obtain requested information from Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell and the state’s elections chief.

In her written response, Sherrill defended her administration’s actions and criticized congressional Republicans for prioritizing political gain over election protection. She challenged the effectiveness of the Republican-backed SAVE America Act and raised concerns about expanding federal government involvement in voter registration systems.

The White House also responded negatively to Sherrill’s reply, with spokeswoman Lauren Bis calling it “laughable” that the governor would criticize the Trump administration on election integrity. Bis noted that Democrats have historically denied that noncitizens register and vote in U.S. elections.

Sherrill’s spokesperson Sean Higgins defended the governor’s response, stating that her letter detailed how the state “moved with transparency and accountability to remediate this error from 2023.” Higgins countered that Republicans were engaged in political theater and pointed to Van Drew’s campaign’s prior employment of someone convicted of voter fraud and related crimes.

Rep. Christopher Smith, the state’s most senior Republican delegation member, echoed calls for complete transparency from New Jersey officials and emphasized that secure elections form the foundation of democracy. The investigation will proceed through multiple channels, including Van Drew’s subcommittee hearing, additional record requests by the full Judiciary Committee, and consideration of further compulsory measures.
