South Carolina Police Officer Killed in Shootout With Armed Suspect; Second Officer Wounded

A Columbia, South Carolina police officer was fatally shot Saturday morning during a confrontation with a suspect who had accumulated arrests across multiple states, authorities said. Officer Christopher DeLong, 29, died from injuries sustained in the gunfight, which erupted roughly an hour after officers responded to a domestic dispute call shortly after 9:30 a.m. Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook announced the death at a news conference, expressing deep grief over the loss.

Officers had been dispatched to a residence where a woman reported that a man subject to a restraining order was destroying her property. The suspect had already fled the scene upon police arrival, but officers located him approximately one hour later, leading to an armed exchange. DeLong, who had served with the department for two years, is survived by a wife and two young children.

A second officer, David Dymock, was wounded during the gunfight but remains in stable condition and is expected to recover, Holbrook said. The suspect, identified as Adam Tyler Dowdy, was also killed in the exchange. Holbrook requested prayers for the DeLong family as they face an extraordinarily difficult period ahead.

Dowdy had compiled an extensive arrest record spanning South Carolina, Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Georgia, including charges for disorderly conduct, driving under the influence, contempt of court, public intoxication, drug possession, and probation violations. Holbrook noted that Dowdy may have been out on bond for a battery charge in Georgia, though officials were still verifying preliminary information about that status.

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., released a statement mourning DeLong’s sacrifice and praising his service to the community. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has launched an investigation into the shooting incident.
