William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, is grieving the loss of junior running back MicahJo Barnett, who died following a medical emergency that occurred on the sideline during the school’s season-opening game against Fort Lewis College. The incident prompted immediate suspension of the matchup at Greene Stadium, with the college community rallying in response to the tragedy.
The athletics department released a statement mourning Barnett’s passing and extending condolences to his family, teammates, and coaching staff. A vigil honoring the athlete was held Saturday evening at 8 p.m. on the Jewell quad, drawing members of the Liberty community and the college’s athletic programs.
Interim President Dr. Drew Van Horn praised the swift response of emergency personnel, including the sheriff’s office, police department, EMS team, and the team physician. “Our hearts are heavy and we just appreciate all the support that we have received from the greater community,” Dr. Van Horn told Fox 4 KC.
Barnett, a business major from Shawnee, Kansas, had scored a touchdown earlier in the game before the medical emergency. The running back appeared in eight games during his freshman year but was limited to five games in 2025 due to a season-ending injury, according to the school’s athletics website.
A standout athlete in high school, Barnett led Liberty North High School to a state championship during his senior year. He is survived by six siblings and his family.
