Democratic Socialist Candidate Defends Far-Left Streamer as Party Leaders Condemn Him

Pennsylvania state Rep. Chris Rabb, a Democratic socialist seeking a House seat from the Philadelphia area, lashed out Friday at fellow party members for distancing themselves from far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Rabb’s sharp rebuke came as multiple prominent Democratic figures have publicly condemned Piker over inflammatory statements, including past remarks suggesting the United States deserved the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

Taking to social media, Rabb criticized Democratic establishment figures for targeting Piker rather than focusing on what he characterized as more pressing threats. “This is what the institutionalists are focusing their efforts on now: Disavowing Hasan Piker,” Rabb wrote, questioning why Democrats were not instead attacking “White Christian nationalists” or “AI overlords.” The statement underscores a growing rift within the party between its progressive-socialist wing and mainstream establishment Democrats.

Rabb won a competitive four-way primary earlier this year that included state Sen. Sharif Street, who had backing from several establishment Democrats. The representative has openly associated with Piker, appearing alongside the streamer at an event in West Philadelphia in April, when he acknowledged he would face criticism for the connection.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called Piker’s comments about American Jews “dangerous and anti-Semitic,” describing them as forcefully as possible. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., introduced a bipartisan resolution this week condemning both Piker and conservative podcaster Candace Owens, stating that Piker’s remarks blaming Jewish Americans for violence directed against them constitute antisemitism.

Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Ill., also condemned Piker this week as an “unapologetic antisemite” engaged in victim-blaming. Schneider warned that Democrats risk credibility problems if they condemn controversial right-wing figures while simultaneously elevating those espousing hatred within their own coalition.

Michigan gubernatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed, another socialist-aligned contender, appeared to create distance from Piker following mounting criticism over their association. El-Sayed told the Michigan Advance that only he and his official campaign representatives speak for his campaign, a statement made amid pressure over his past connections to the streamer.

Rabb faces only independent Dennis Mahoney in the general election for Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, a heavily Democratic area. Political observers view him as strongly positioned to succeed retiring Rep. Dwight Evans, making the primary victory a likely path to Congress.
