Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur expressed confidence Friday that running back Josh Jacobs will continue as a member of the roster, even as the player faces two misdemeanor charges. LaFleur made the statement following the team’s 42-38 preseason victory over the Arizona Cardinals, which concluded Green Bay’s exhibition schedule.
The Brown County District Attorney’s office in Wisconsin filed charges against Jacobs on Thursday for battery and criminal damage to property, stemming from an incident that occurred three months earlier. Jacobs was arrested May 26 following a police investigation at his residence and was released from custody the following day.
When pressed about Jacobs’ potential participation in the Packers’ regular-season opener on September 13 against Minnesota, LaFleur declined to speculate on his availability. The coach stated he lacked sufficient information to make any determination regarding the running back’s status for that matchup.
Jacobs’ legal representatives—David Z. Chesnoff, Richard A. Schonfeld, and Clarence F. Duchac III—issued a statement Thursday clarifying that the charges do not constitute domestic violence allegations. The attorneys indicated the matter would be resolved through court proceedings rather than public commentary.
The NFL confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation. The Packers organization said it remains aware of the charges and will continue cooperating with league authorities throughout the legal process.
Jacobs accumulated 929 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns during the previous season. His 2024 campaign proved more prolific, with 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns, earning him his third Pro Bowl selection.
Green Bay’s backup running backs include MarShawn Lloyd, Pierre Strong Jr., and Chris Brooks. Lloyd remained injury-free throughout the preseason after plagued by ailments that limited the 2024 third-round draft pick to one game across the past two seasons. Strong, who spent last season on the practice squad, has recorded 499 career rushing yards. Brooks rushed for 106 yards on 27 carries last season while predominantly handling special teams duties.
