The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers in a blockbuster trade earlier this month, sending outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers Brady Smith and River Ryan to Motor City in return. Just weeks after the deal, Skubal took the mound at Comerica Park wearing a Dodgers uniform for his first appearance against his former team.
The emotional weight of the moment was evident when Detroit’s video board displayed a tribute to the right-hander, prompting visible tears and a standing ovation from the home crowd. Skubal appeared visibly moved by the gesture as he prepared to pitch in front of Tigers fans who had watched him develop as one of baseball’s elite arms.
The Dodgers, leading the National League West, arrived in Detroit riding a three-game losing streak against Atlanta. Despite his emotional state, Skubal needed to deliver on the mound with significant pressure on his shoulders.
A mix of cheers and boos greeted Skubal as he walked onto the field, and a malfunctioning PitchCom device briefly delayed his debut. Gleyber Torres, his former teammate at second base, delivered a double deep to center field on an early pitch, but Skubal recovered by striking out the next two batters and escaping the inning without allowing a run.
