Tarik Skubal’s homecoming to Detroit drew a complex emotional response from Tigers fans at Comerica Park, as the left-hander took the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers against his former organization. The crowd’s reaction ranged from sustained applause to scattered boos when Skubal was announced before the first pitch, reflecting divided sentiments over the two-time Cy Young Award winner’s recent departure from the franchise.
The Tigers organization acknowledged Skubal’s seven-year tenure with a video montage displayed on the stadium’s videoboard, concluding with an appreciative message thanking the pitcher for his service. Skubal walked from the bullpen beyond the left-field wall to the Dodgers dugout without visibly reacting to either the tribute or the crowd’s mixed reception.
When Skubal jogged to the pitcher’s mound, initial boos gave way to cheers as he prepared for the opening inning. A brief delay occurred when he experienced difficulties with his communication device before throwing his first pitch, a 96-mph fastball.
Gleyber Torres capitalized on Skubal’s second delivery, driving it to center field for a double as the crowd reacted loudly. The pitcher quickly regained composure, striking out Hao-Yu Lee and All-Star Kevin McGonigle while forcing All-Star Dillon Dingler to fly out.
Detroit drafted Skubal out of Seattle University in the ninth round of the 2018 draft, and the 29-year-old spent his entire major league career with the Tigers until the franchise traded him to Los Angeles earlier this month. Skubal had expressed his preference in July to remain with Detroit through season’s end and pursue a World Series championship, a goal unrealized by the Tigers since 1984.
Tigers management determined that trading Skubal before the deadline to acquire three minor league prospects outweighed the risk of losing him to free agency. Manager A.J. Hinch acknowledged before the game that Detroit’s extensive familiarity with Skubal’s pitching style offered no competitive advantage at the plate.
