Jury Resumes Deliberations in Lindsay Clancy Case Over Mental State During Children’s Deaths

Deliberations resumed Friday in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in the case of Lindsay Clancy, 36, as jurors weigh whether a severe psychiatric condition impaired her criminal responsibility when she killed her three young children in 2023. The defendant has acknowledged strangling her children but claims postpartum psychosis—a rare mental illness occurring after childbirth—left her disconnected from reality at the time of the killings.

The defense presented evidence that Clancy had sought mental health treatment for weeks preceding the incident and spent time in a psychiatric hospital before her discharge. Medical experts testifying for the defense characterized her condition as a break from reality that prevented her from controlling her conduct when she killed her children: Cora, age 5; Dawson, age 3; and Callan, 8 months old.

Prosecutors presented a competing theory, arguing that Clancy was aware of her actions and made a deliberate decision to kill her children while she was experiencing depression and suicidal thoughts. The state contends she chose to take her children with her in a suicide attempt rather than being unable to comprehend her behavior.

The jury has the option to convict Clancy of murder, the lesser charge of manslaughter, or acquit her based on lack of criminal responsibility. She has pleaded not guilty on those grounds and did not testify, though jurors heard extensive testimony from medical professionals who treated her and individuals close to her.

After the incident at her Massachusetts home, Clancy cut herself and jumped from a second-story window. She survived the fall but remains paralyzed from the waist down. The killings occurred fewer than three weeks after her psychiatric hospital discharge.
