City administrators in Queens have launched a new strategy to address chronic flooding by transforming concrete medians into permeable green spaces capable of capturing and filtering stormwater runoff. The initiative targets neighborhoods most vulnerable to street flooding, replacing impervious surfaces with vegetation and engineered soil systems designed to absorb rainfall before it overwhelms drainage systems.
The project reflects a shift away from traditional gray infrastructure toward nature-based solutions that provide multiple benefits including improved water management, enhanced air quality, and expanded urban green space. Officials framed the effort as part of broader climate adaptation planning as the city confronts increasing precipitation and severe weather events.
By converting these medians into bioswales and rain gardens, the city aims to reduce the volume of water reaching overwhelmed storm sewers during heavy rainfall events. The green infrastructure approach allows stormwater to percolate into the ground rather than accumulating on streets and in low-lying areas where flooding poses risks to residents and properties.
