The Republican National Committee escalated enforcement efforts Wednesday against New Jersey election authorities, issuing formal violation notices under the National Voter Registration Act and threatening litigation if officials fail to comply with records requests. The RNC targeted the state’s secretary of state and election officials in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties, demanding documents related to noncitizen voter removals and citizenship verification procedures.
Election officials have until September 15 to produce the requested materials or face potential legal proceedings, according to the RNC. The committee is seeking comprehensive information about voter roll maintenance activities and the circumstances surrounding noncitizen registrations discovered within the state system.
RNC Chairman Joe Gruters stated that Governor Mikie Sherrill’s administration has acknowledged the presence of noncitizens on New Jersey’s voter rolls, yet election officials have resisted providing documentation. “Voters deserve answers, and the RNC is putting officials on notice: Comply with the law, hand over the records or face legal action,” Gruters said in a statement.
According to RNC documentation, Bergen County records identified 134 noncitizens removed from voter rolls between January 2023 and August 2026, with 91 of those registrations traced to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. The MVC experienced a software error that improperly registered approximately 6,600 individuals between June 2023 and June 2024, before Sherrill took office.
Sherrill’s administration disclosed that approximately 5,100 people affected by the error were removed from rolls due to lacking separate registration or eligibility documentation. An additional 1,450 registrations were changed to rejected status pending county official review, while approximately 340 people improperly registered by the error voted in elections.
State officials identified roughly 220 individuals affected by the error who voted but possessed previous registrations or separate attestations suggesting valid eligibility. Sherrill directed county authorities to resolve remaining cases before November elections and has accused the Trump administration of seeking undue federal control over state voter systems.
The governor characterized federal data requests as a “phishing expedition” and resisted efforts to obtain nonpublic voter information. Sherrill’s office stated its investigation into the MVC error remains ongoing, while the RNC and state officials declined immediate comment to media inquiries.
