President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he has signed an executive order to officially designate the American portion of Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” marking another escalation in his administration’s contentious trade disputes with Canada. The rename applies only to waters within U.S. jurisdiction along the shared border between New York and Ontario.
The move reflects intensifying tensions between the two nations over trade policies and tariffs. Trump has repeatedly criticized Canadian trade practices and has taken several actions designed to pressure the neighboring country into renegotiating commercial agreements.
Lake Ontario, the smallest of the five Great Lakes by surface area, has been known by its current name since European contact in North America. The executive order represents an unusual assertion of presidential authority over geographical nomenclature tied to international waters and shared natural resources.
