Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has regained her standing as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America in August 2026, restoring formal ties to the organization after her previous membership lapsed in 2019. The DSA confirmed the New York congresswoman’s renewed status in a statement to City & State New York, noting that her original membership began in 2018 on a one-year basis. The seven-year gap in her formal affiliation comes as the socialist group has gained electoral momentum through recent Democratic primary victories, including contests against sitting incumbents.
The membership lapse surfaced after Ocasio-Cortez recently identified herself as a member of the DSA’s New York City chapter while claiming no connection to the national organization, prompting DSA leadership to investigate her official status. The organization subsequently discovered that her dues had not been renewed following the 2019 expiration. DSA has since transitioned from requiring manual annual renewals to implementing automatic renewal procedures, a change that occurred after Ocasio-Cortez’s membership had already ceased.
The timing of her renewal has drawn skepticism from some observers and socialist activists online, who question whether the decision coincides conveniently with DSA’s rising political prominence and speculation about a potential Ocasio-Cortez 2028 presidential campaign. Washington Post columnist Megan McArdle characterized the situation as a reasonable administrative oversight, while others have expressed doubt about the coincidental nature of the renewal announcement. Occasional commentators have used the episode to generate lighthearted critiques regarding DSA membership practices.
Internal divisions within the DSA over whether to endorse a 2028 presidential candidate have placed Ocasio-Cortez at the center of organizational debate, according to reporting from The Washington Post earlier this month. Her congressional office declined to provide comment when contacted by Fox News Digital regarding the membership renewal.
