Kareem Johnson, 34, of Fort Lauderdale, was arrested Thursday in connection with a fatal vehicular collision that occurred May 9 in Miami-Dade County’s Brownsville neighborhood. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies apprehended Johnson at 12:20 a.m. in the Gladeview-West Little River area, according to an arrest report filed with the agency.
The crash took place around 9:15 p.m. on May 9 at the intersection of Northwest 22 Avenue and 50th Street. Deputies alleged that Johnson failed to observe a red traffic signal and struck the side of another vehicle, resulting in a fatality. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene and pronounced one occupant deceased.
Johnson was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after 3:10 p.m. Thursday on two serious felony charges: vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter. Prosecutors filed charges on July 30, prompting a judge to issue an arrest warrant, court records indicate. Circuit Judge Lody Jean was assigned to preside over the case, and Johnson was denied bond.
