Authorities in South Miami are urging extreme caution among residents and visitors following a fatal crocodile attack on a dog that occurred Thursday. The incident took place in the 6200 block of Southwest 64th Court, according to police statements released to the public.

Law enforcement officials are advising all community members to keep children and pets away from canals, waterways, ponds and other bodies of water where crocodiles may be present. Additionally, police emphasized that residents and visitors should not approach, feed, harass or attempt to capture any nearby crocodile under any circumstances.

Crocodiles receive protection under both Florida state law and federal regulations. Anyone who encounters the animal should maintain a safe distance and immediately notify the appropriate wildlife authorities, police said. Residents are also encouraged to alert their neighbors about the threat, particularly those with pets or who frequent the area.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is handling reports related to the crocodile. Concerned residents or visitors can contact the agency at 866-392-4286 to report sightings or seek additional information about crocodile safety in their neighborhood.
