The National Football League announced Wednesday it will discontinue the Pro Bowl, eliminating the annual all-star exhibition that had been a fixture of the league’s calendar in various formats since 1951. The decision marks a significant departure from a tradition that spanned more than seven decades and featured the sport’s elite performers competing in a showcase event.
Despite ending the game itself, the NFL said players selected to the Pro Bowl will continue to receive that distinction and recognition. The move reflects ongoing efforts by the league to evolve its all-star format and reconsider how it celebrates top performers.
The Pro Bowl had faced declining television viewership in recent years, prompting league officials to reassess the event’s relevance to fans and players. The NFL has previously experimented with alternative formats to generate greater interest in the all-star competition.
