Broadcaster Bill Maher indicated Sunday that he would consider supporting Vice President JD Vance in a 2028 presidential race should the Democratic Party select a candidate from its socialist faction. Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week,” Maher responded affirmatively when asked whether such a scenario could sway his vote, citing concerns about the party’s ideological direction.

Maher characterized his electoral allegiance as uncommitted because former President Donald Trump faces constitutional term limits. He rejected distinctions between socialism and communism while addressing the platform positions of the Democratic Socialists of America, arguing that the organization’s stated goals align with communist principles despite rhetorical differences.

The HBO host contrasted Republican willingness to appear on his program “Real Time with Bill Maher” with Democratic reluctance, despite his historical support for Democratic candidates. He characterized Democratic leadership as unwilling to engage in unscripted discourse unless guaranteed favorable conditions, describing the party’s posture as fearful.

Maher warned that increasingly radical figures were gaining influence within Democratic ranks, referencing candidates in Colorado and Wisconsin who advocate for abolishing police departments and prisons. He distinguished the 2026 midterm elections, which he predicted Democrats would win as a referendum on Trump, from the 2028 presidential contest where ideological fractures would become decisive.

The Democratic Socialists of America’s platform calls for state ownership of major corporations and essential industries alongside complete elimination of law enforcement and correctional systems. Maher expressed alarm at what he termed unrealistic policy positions gaining traction among Democratic candidates nationwide.
