Wyndham Clark found himself at the center of a rules controversy Sunday after winning the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club, as television analysts questioned whether he had illegally improved his lie on the 14th hole during the final round. The two-time U.S. Open champion’s actions drew immediate scrutiny from both the CBS broadcast booth and social media users, creating a significant talking point in the hours following his three-shot victory.

During his pre-shot routine in the rough on the par-4 hole, Clark removed multiple irons from his bag and placed them behind the ball in succession while taking practice swings. The maneuver prompted CBS analysts Trevor Immelman and Frank Nobilo to suggest on air that Clark may have been attempting to find a better lie, with Nobilo remarking that “the lie might be better” after observing the club placements.

At a news conference Tuesday ahead of the Tour Championship, Clark dismissed the allegations entirely, stating that players routinely test different clubs to assess their stance without improving it. He emphasized that he never fully grounded any club behind the ball and that his lie remained unchanged throughout the process. “I never fully put the club down behind it. I don’t think anything of it,” Clark said.

According to USGA Rule 8.1b(4), players are permitted to ground a club lightly in front of or behind the ball during their routine. Clark noted that similar controversies have followed him previously, including during his U.S. Open victory at Shinnecock Hills earlier this year and at Bay Hill. “People can think what they want. I know I didn’t do anything that was costing the integrity of the field,” he concluded.

Clark currently sits third in the FedEx Cup standings behind Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick, having recorded three victories in 2026 heading into this week’s final playoff event.
