An armed confrontation at a Montana home on Sunday evening claimed the lives of eight people, including four children, in what authorities are describing as a mass homicide. Alan Smith, 44, opened fire during a family dinner gathering before taking his own life. The Billings Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting an active shooter at 6:01 p.m. and heard gunfire emanating from the rear of the residence.
Among those killed were Brad Ireland’s ex-wife Megan Ghekiere and their two biological children, Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7. Also slain were Ghekiere’s two stepchildren from her current marriage to Adam Ghekiere: Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12. Smith’s parents, Dana and Barb Smith, and his grandmother Evelyn were also fatally shot.
Neighbors identified 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere as instrumental in the response, having called 911 and attempting to alert emergency services despite the violence unfolding around her. Family friend Jennifer Mercer, who launched a fundraising campaign to assist with funeral expenses, emphasized that Charlotte’s actions represented heroic efforts to protect her family during the attack.
Smith’s parents had instructed him to vacate their property several weeks prior to the shooting, according to Ireland. Smith, originally from the Seattle area, had relocated to Montana years earlier and resided with his parents after attending Eastern Washington University. Ireland characterized Smith as reclusive, noting he spent extensive time isolated in his room and had been unable to secure or maintain employment.
While Ireland reported that Smith had never exhibited violent behavior to his knowledge, he noted the suspect was capable of verbal abuse. Adam Ghekiere, who was working at Billings airport during the incident, learned of the shooting through dispatch communications and raced to the residence, only to discover it engulfed in flames approximately two hours later.
Emergency responders arrived within minutes of the 911 call to discover the property fully ablaze. Billings Fire Department personnel continued battling the inferno until approximately 1 a.m. Monday. The subdivision residence, located outside city limits, was not equipped with fire hydrants, complicating firefighting efforts. Officials noted that the condition and structural integrity of the home required careful investigation procedures.
