James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Texas, is moving to compel a court to release depositions connected to Republican opponent Ken Paxton. The maneuver is part of a broader campaign strategy aimed at directing voter attention toward Paxton’s history of legal troubles and misconduct accusations. Talarico’s team filed a motion Wednesday seeking the court’s permission to make the documents public.

The depositions stem from a civil litigation matter involving Unity Resources, a company dealing in mineral assets that faced fraud allegations. Although Paxton maintained ties to Unity Resources, he was not named as a defendant in the case, which ultimately resulted in a settlement. The Wall Street Journal has previously disclosed portions of Paxton’s testimony, reporting that he invoked memory lapses roughly 90 times during questioning and potentially violated attorney-client privilege protections.

Talarico’s campaign has simultaneously deployed other lines of attack against Paxton, including circulating footage showing him allegedly removing a pen from a courthouse security area. The Democratic candidate has also highlighted Paxton’s impeachment by the Texas House, his subsequent acquittal in the state Senate, and his earlier securities fraud criminal charges that concluded through a settlement involving restitution without any guilt acknowledgment.

Paxton has consistently rejected the accusations leveled against him, characterizing them as politically motivated attacks similar to those directed at President Donald Trump, who has publicly supported Paxton. This defensive posture proved effective when Paxton defeated incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the Republican primary earlier this year. Legal counsel for Talarico’s campaign argues in their court filing that Texas law provides no justification for withholding the depositions and that transparency serves the state constitutional mandate ensuring public access to judicial proceedings.
