Conservative radio host Buck Sexton predicted on the “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” podcast that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is positioned to become the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee. The former CIA analyst argued that the New York congresswoman has adopted a strategy similar to former President Barack Obama’s path to the presidency, gradually toning down her more provocative positions for public consumption.

Sexton asserted that Ocasio-Cortez could lead the Democratic ticket despite her “radical” public perception. He drew parallels to Obama, noting that the former president was the Senate’s most liberal member before winning the Democratic nomination, emphasizing that “it’s about story” in presidential politics.

The commentary reflects intensifying competition within Democratic circles for the 2028 nomination. A top aide to California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently criticized fellow potential candidate Pete Buttigieg’s efforts to build support among Black voters in the South, signaling early jockeying among prospective candidates.

Progressive activists have rejected Ocasio-Cortez as a viable 2028 contender. The Democratic Socialists of America’s Liberation Caucus released a statement last week arguing she has strayed too far from the socialist agenda to represent the party’s leftist wing in a presidential race.

Republican politics remain equally unsettled heading toward 2028. A University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll released last month showed Secretary of State Marco Rubio gaining traction against Vice President JD Vance in a hypothetical GOP nomination matchup.
