House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., released a video Monday confirming he met with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner at the senior adviser’s request. Jeffries said the discussion centered on addressing what he characterized as the nation’s affordability crisis, emphasizing the economic hardships facing American families.
The disclosed meeting drew criticism from progressive Democrats, prompting Jeffries to publicly justify the encounter. He stated that his conference would maintain aggressive oversight of the Trump administration without exception, declaring that accountability would begin immediately upon implementation of Democratic-led initiatives.
Jeffries outlined House Democrats’ legislative record of opposing various Trump administration proposals, citing conflicts over tariffs, Medicaid, educational nutrition programs, the Affordable Care Act, Iran military action, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement funding. He framed these efforts as constitutional governance guided by factual evidence and legal principles rather than partisan motivation.
Should Democrats reclaim House control in the 2026 midterm elections, Jeffries would emerge as a leading contender for the speaker position, cementing his role as the party’s congressional leadership voice during a period of divided government.
