Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez of Florida has challenged Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon’s assertion that she is not a socialist, despite her acknowledged membership in the Democratic Socialists of America. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Gimenez suggested Nixon either genuinely embraces socialist ideology or lacks sufficient political acumen, given her affiliation with the organization.

Nixon defeated Trump impeachment witness Alexander Vindman in last week’s Democratic primary. When questioned by NBC News on Sunday, she maintained she does not hold socialist views, citing her DSA membership stemmed from the group’s stances on public housing, healthcare, veterans’ benefits and campaign finance reform.

Gimenez, who fled Cuba during Fidel Castro’s rule as a child, drew historical parallels to demonstrate how socialist leaders have concealed their true ideological positions. He referenced Castro’s initial denials of Marxist leanings before publicly embracing Leninism on December 2, 1961.

The congressman argued that Nixon’s positions and those of DSA members employ democracy as a mechanism to undermine democratic systems. He cited Venezuela under Hugo Chavez and Nicaragua under Daniel Ortega as examples, noting both nations initially gained power through elections before dismantling democratic institutions.

Gimenez pointed to DSA proposals to abolish the Senate and restructure the Supreme Court as evidence of this pattern. He highlighted Ortega’s July announcement eliminating future elections and plans to imprison political opponents as proof that socialism represents “a pack of lies.”

Predicting incumbent Republican Senator Ashley Moody will decisively defeat Nixon in November, Gimenez emphasized that his Miami-to-Key West district, comprising 70 percent Hispanic residents including Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants, recognizes these political patterns. He expressed concern that such awareness does not extend uniformly across the nation.

The DSA previously celebrated what would have been Castro’s 100th birthday while criticizing Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s maintenance of the longstanding Cuban embargo. Gimenez countered that Rubio, whose parents immigrated from Cuba, pursues correct policy and that the embargo permits food and medicine shipments.

Gimenez attributed Cuba’s economic struggles to governmental incompetence rather than trade restrictions, noting the nation once dominated global sugar production but now imports sugar cane. He dismissed DSA defenses of Cuba’s healthcare system as ideologically inconsistent with individual freedom.
