Ukraine observed the 35th anniversary of its August 24, 1991, independence declaration from the Soviet Union on Monday, even as Russian forces continued their assault on civilian targets and military installations across the country. The occasion drew international attention amid escalating cross-border drone and missile strikes, with one regional security analyst characterizing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s behavior as increasingly desperate.
European Council President António Costa and leaders from Finland, Lithuania, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, and Latvia traveled to Kyiv to stand with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the holiday festivities. Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s desire for peace while rejecting any concessions that would amount to surrender to Moscow’s territorial or political demands.
A Russian drone attack Friday on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, Zelenskyy’s birthplace, resulted in at least 16 deaths and 130 injuries, according to reporting by The Associated Press. Ukraine’s Security Service had previously warned of potential terrorist threats targeting the Independence Day observance, prompting heightened security measures across the country.
Carrie Filipetti, executive director of the Vandenberg Coalition and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, attributed recent Russian aggression to Putin’s anxiety over Ukrainian military successes. She told Fox News Digital that Ukrainian forces have penetrated deeper into Russian territory, including areas near Moscow and St. Petersburg, forcing Moscow to shift tactics toward civilian targets rather than military objectives.
Filipetti characterized Russia’s intensified strikes on civilian infrastructure as an effort to erode Ukrainian resolve rather than achieve military advantage. She noted that Russia has suffered substantial manpower losses each month, exceeding its recruitment capacity and necessitating reliance on North Korean, Cuban, and other foreign military personnel to sustain operations.
Ukrainian authorities implemented heightened security protocols for the Independence Day celebration, cautioning citizens against sharing videos or photographs that might compromise military positions or reveal soldier locations. Officials warned the public to remain vigilant on public transportation and guard against potential sabotage.
Filipetti emphasized that strong international support for Ukraine during significant national occasions sends a message to other potential adversaries, including China, that unilateral military invasions invite consequences rather than rewards. She noted that the United States must demonstrate consistent commitment to deterring aggression by authoritarian powers contemplating similar actions.
