A Charlotte-based emergency medicine physician was taken into custody on August 22 following allegations that he fired shots at a moving vehicle during an interstate confrontation, leaving two female occupants wounded. The incident occurred on Interstate 77 approximately three miles north of the North Carolina-Virginia border around 8:50 a.m., according to Virginia State Police.

Dr. Richard Thomas Arriviello, 61, allegedly discharged a firearm from his Mercedes-Benz while traveling northbound, striking both a 12-year-old girl and her 20-year-old sister in the legs. Emergency responders airlifted the two victims to a medical facility, where their injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening, state police confirmed.

Following the shooting, Arriviello’s Mercedes-Benz was located and stopped approximately 15 miles from the initial incident site. Troopers apprehended him without further incident and transported him into custody.

Arriviello faces multiple felony charges stemming from the alleged attack, including malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm with intent to maim, and firearm use during commission of a felony. He remains incarcerated without bond at New River Valley Regional Jail and is scheduled for a court appearance on September 29.

The North Carolina Medical Board lists Arriviello as a licensed emergency medicine physician since 2010 with no prior public disciplinary actions. Business records identify him as owner of Family Urgent Care in Monroe, North Carolina. Authorities have not disclosed what precipitated the encounter, and the Jeep’s driver received a reckless driving citation.
