The Houston Texans completed a trade with the New England Patriots on Monday to acquire wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, addressing immediate roster needs at the position. Boutte announced the deal via social media before official confirmation from either franchise. Houston surrendered safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick to complete the transaction, per multiple reports.
The acquisition represents an urgent response to the knee injury sustained by the Texans’ No. 2 receiver, Jayden Higgins, who tore his ACL during a joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday. Higgins was slated to start alongside star receiver Nico Collins after recording 41 receptions for 525 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie last season.
Boutte, selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft, contributed 33 receptions for 551 yards and six touchdowns during his previous campaign with New England. The Patriots had faced positional overcrowding following their June trade acquisition of receiver A.J. Brown and March signing of Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million agreement.
The Texans have also moved to bolster their receiving corps by signing veteran options Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard over the weekend as they work to mitigate the impact of Higgins’ absence.
