Jacob Young of the Washington Nationals delivered a jaw-dropping defensive gem during Sunday’s matchup against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park, executing a wall-climbing grab that ranks among the year’s most impressive catches. The acrobatic play came in the third inning as the Marlins held a 1-0 advantage with one out and a runner on first base.
Marlins outfielder Heriberto Hernández connected on an 86-mph slider from Nationals starter Jackson Kent, sending the ball deep into left-center field. Young quickly picked up the flight path and sprinted toward the wall, where he timed his approach perfectly before launching himself upward by planting his right leg on the mesh fence and using his hand for additional momentum.
Young snagged the ball at the top of the wall while Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, who had been running from first base, stood stunned on third. The 27-year-old then fired the ball back to first base to complete an inning-ending double play and end the Marlins’ threat.
Despite the defensive heroics, Washington fell 6-2. Young has established himself as one of baseball’s premier defensive center fielders since joining the team late in 2023, while also posting his most productive offensive season with a .244 average, 10 home runs, and 43 RBIs.
