Lando Norris will start Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix from pole position at the Zandvoort circuit, hoping to capture a second consecutive Formula 1 victory. The McLaren driver edged out Mercedes’ George Russell and standings leader Kimi Antonelli during qualifying, demonstrating unexpected performance gains when it mattered most.
Norris’ triumph at Hungary on July 26 has set expectations high for another strong finish. However, the British driver cautioned that conditions may prove more challenging this weekend, citing struggles in low-speed corners that qualifying masks through the use of fresh tires and reduced fuel loads.
Saturday’s sprint race offered mixed signals for the grid’s top contenders. Russell captured the sprint victory, while Antonelli finished fourth but extended his championship lead to 53 points over Russell. Lewis Hamilton endured a difficult day, placing seventh in the sprint before qualifying fifth for the main event.
Antonelli’s advantage in the standings now reaches 56 points ahead of Russell, with larger gaps to Charles Leclerc at 79 points and Norris at 90 points. Despite his pole position, Norris acknowledged that maintaining consistency over a full Grand Prix distance presents a different challenge than qualifying’s short burst of performance.
