Giancarlo Stanton’s injury-plagued season took another turn for the worse this week when the 36-year-old New York Yankees outfielder suffered a new calf strain while running the bases. The setback occurred during a rehabilitation assignment as Stanton worked toward a September return from his initial right calf injury. Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed the latest injury, describing it as a moderate-grade strain on the left calf.

Stanton’s latest setback has dramatically complicated the timeline for his availability down the stretch. Boone acknowledged that with the calendar advancing into late August, the possibility of Stanton returning before season’s end has become “challenging,” though the team is not ruling out a potential comeback. The injury occurred while Stanton was running between second and third base during the Yankees’ rehabilitation work.

This marks the second calf-related injury Stanton has sustained during the 2025 season. He initially strained his right calf in April and appeared close to returning in June before experiencing another strain on the same leg in a different location. Prior to this latest setback, Stanton had resumed running activities and taken at-bats during his rehab assignment.

Through 24 games this season before his latest injury, Stanton batted .256 with three home runs and 14 runs batted in. The Yankees’ offense has struggled considerably since Aaron Judge’s injury early in June, making Stanton’s return a significant priority for the team’s championship hopes.

Injuries have defined much of Stanton’s tenure with New York since his 2018 debut. Over the five seasons following his first year in pinstripes, the slugger missed 266 of 708 games due to various ailments including biceps strains, knee injuries, hamstring problems and Achilles tendinitis.

Last season, Stanton appeared in 77 games and posted a .273 average with 24 home runs and 66 RBIs, helping lead the Yankees to their first World Series appearance since 2009. He contributed seven postseason home runs, including four during the ALCS victory over the Cleveland Guardians.

The Yankees, sitting three games back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East entering the weekend, must continue their season without their star outfielder as questions mount about his status for the remainder of the year.
