Sammy Gravano Details His Break With John Gotti and Decision to Become Government Witness

Sammy “The Bull” Gravano abandoned decades of Mafia loyalty after secretly recorded conversations between himself and John Gotti convinced him the organization’s code had become worthless. During a recent podcast appearance, Gravano recalled the pivotal moment when he resolved to switch sides and cooperate with the government against the Gambino crime family boss.

Gravano said he grew increasingly frustrated with Gotti’s careless remarks captured on tape discussing the Paul Castellano murder and other organized crime activities. What began as annoyance escalated when the two men were arrested and Gotti moved to control their defense strategy, Gravano explained.

The situation reached a breaking point when Gravano learned defense lawyers planned to portray him as a bloodthirsty killer to the jury while painting Gotti as a sympathetic figure, according to Gravano’s account. This reflected what he described as the Mafia’s fundamental principle: protecting the boss at all costs, even through betrayal of loyal subordinates.

Gravano later discovered Gotti had actually planned to have him killed, though this revelation came after his decision to cooperate was already made. Gotti allegedly instructed associate Frankie LoCascio to tell other captains that Gravano had become unstable and was killing indiscriminately.

In his wide-ranging interview, Gravano discussed his participation in 19 murders and his role in orchestrating the Castellano hit, detailing his rise through one of America’s most powerful criminal organizations.
